Early Detection Is Key

Our first and most important line of defense is early detection.

Regular screenings are vital. By the time you can feel a lump the higher the stage and the more serious the prognosis.

Most medical groups or providers nowadays send out reminders when it's near time for our yearly mammograms or when we're overdue. Please don't ignore them.

Yes, it's unpleasant and uncomfortable, and even for some women it can be quite painful. Yeah, I'm not gonna sugar coat it. But we need to stay current and up to date with our images.

And for the months in between, Self Examinations are also key.

In my forties, my mother talked to me about self-examinations. She told me to do it after the end of my period each month. Though I no longer have periods, I do a self-examination the 1st of the month. When my rent is due.

Rent. Breast.

Rent. Breast.

Another side of this could be off putting, but I'm not holding back.

Lovers.

You also have a hand, pun intended, in helping to save the life of your wives or girlfriends.

Do not hesitate to speak up when during those intimate moments of sensual caressing you yourself feel something that shouldn't be there or hadn't been there before.

I get that it can be alarming to bring up but that's what you do for the woman you love.

True story, a friend's boyfriend felt something and said something. Though it was sizeable enough to be felt and her treatment extensive, she is 7 years cancer free. It may have ruined the moment but it saved her life.

October may be designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but yes we know, every month we should be aware.

  • Stay aware all year long.

  • Mammograms.

  • Self Examination.

  • Know your family history.
